1989 135 V6 Merc OB - Until last weekend - EXCELLENT condition. Tune-up every other year, Impeller kit & thermostats replaced alt. years, cyl. compression witin 1% of each other, etc.
Last weekend, while running - sudden loss of power! Open cowling to hear the dreaded "clacking" Engine never got hot, and alarm never went off, but I'm told that the oil res. was empty when the mechaninc got to it, and I now have zero compression in Cyl. 1. Told by mechanic "...probably about $3500 to rebuild power head"
Does this all sound right ? What should I expect? If I killed Cyl 1 - what are 2-6 going to look/act like ? What's involved here and should I go elsewhere for a better deal? Help !!!

I don't know about your local Merc dealer, as they tend to only replace what is needed. If you're mechanicaly inclined, do it yourself, or find a rebuilt powerhead online. I have found quite a few websites for rebuilt powerheads, from what I understand 1yr is the industry standard warranty. AOL has some listed that look pretty good, but I don't know for sure, I plan on rebuilding mine this winter. Good Luck, Hope you find what you need.

RR01

Techie, for $3500 on a small bore v-6 here is what you should expect:
all cyl honed/ resized whithin factory specs...being an 89 I would expect all oversize in this motor when done...
6 new pistons/rings /rod bearings [big an small end]
a factory crankshaft... NO reworked journals
all new gaskets, of course...
new oil gear
3 carbs that have been torn down, cleaned and assembled with new inlet valves an gaskets
fresh fuel pump diaphrams/check valves
new fuel lines/filter on the engine
new bleed lines
complete timing/ linkage setup...
drop the case, new water pump and gear lube...
an finally, .002" larger main jets, to keep the 'new girl' fat n happy...

P S...this site has decent powerheads...

Thank you ODDD1, I have a smaller motor, can't afford the V-6's yet. I just went off the top of my head with my info.

RR01

Re: Merc - Rebuild or not ???

Techie, there are a lot of powerheads sitting
on the screamandfly.com engine parts forum. I lost my Merc 1150 this year and found a V6 150 with trim from a Merc Mechanic in southern Wisconsin, it was his engine that he had owned for several years. Got it for 1500.00, if you search the small towns near lakes you can find good engines as there are lots of boats, motors, and eager sellers in those regions. I am sorry to hear about the end of a great motor.

Good Luck!!
