I have an 83 115 hp ( Mariner) my question is this ---on the carbs there is a rubber tube , over i guess that is routed back into the venture of the carb and i am thinking about installing a Johnson fuel primer to inject fuel into it so as to abort the hard starting problem when it is cold. Any ideas about this? What about wiring it in with the choke to activate the unit ? [

Why would you want to do this in the first place? Mercury/Mariner are easy to start cold.

Pump bulb
Advance throttle (How ever your controls work
Push and hold choke
Crank
When it fires then let go og the choke and bring the thottle down to about 1500 RPM's.

Works every time.

Craig

Re: merc primer adaptation

This is my second merc product, the other was a 1976 150 hp and the same problem. Many dollars and several mechanics / marine shops later and had the same problem . This engine has great compression and starts about as quick once it makes the initial start as any merc product i have seen. A very short burst of carb cleaner of other combustible fluid and it comes alive. It runs very good , with plenty of power , idles great. I guess i have just plane got enough of grinding on the mercs. Later models came with a primer and they started much better or so i'm told . Thanks for your response

Flatsman,
What merc140 said is true, about 20 years ago I had a mercury 1980 175HP Black Max and basicly using the proceedure Merc140 wrote I had no problem starting it. I now have a 1989 50HP Mariner and I do the same and I never have trouble starting it either. If I were you I would check to make sure the automatic choke is working properly. The next time you go out you might try using the manual choke on the motor and see if it starts easier.

Re: merc primer adaptation

I have a 35 hp that starts ok ----local marine dealer has spent many years in the business that some engines do this and he hasn't fully understood it yet either. Choke is working fine ---it just does this on cold starts ---then it starts better than most motors --just touch the key and it fires off and idles great.
