I have a merc outdrive I just got ('78 or '79) and took it off the boat to check; the drive shaft clicks but doesn't turn.

The prop and shift seems fine; I can turn the prop by hand both directions in neutral, one direction in forward, other direction in reverse.

I can visibly see the shaft turn a tiny amount; it budges the verticle shaft I can see on the upper unit but it doesn't make a complete circle.

I would think bad bearings would mean it would be frozen and not turn at all.

Where should I start? separate upper and lower, then start at the top?

A Clymer manual is on the way in a week. No rush it's my backup project boat.

Engine: Merc mcm470 170 HP 224 cid SN: 5479207

Out drive: model "R" drive (it has the loop on top and lines on the upper, rounded lower unit) serial number hard to read looks like 5339540 or 5839540.

The www.mercruiser.com parts express site doesn't recognise my serial number even with a 0 in front of it; so they say I can't use their site for 7-digit serial numbers pre-1980.

Re: Merc Outdrive stuck shaft

Are there good online sites that have complete exploded views of the Alpha one or "R" outdrive online?

I went to a few sites mentioned in other posts but mainly found pictures or ordering info, not "how to assemble" or "disassemble".

Try this site for a diagram.

I would remove the top cap of the drive to take a look at the gears.

If the drive is removed (which I think it is), you should be able to turn the drive shart by hand.
Make sure you turn it clockwise.

You will probably need to seperate the upper and lower anyway...

Re: Merc Outdrive stuck shaft

I got the upper and lower separated. The upper turns fine and the gears look fine.

There is something stuck in the lower unit. I got the impeller and impeller housing off but the driveshaft doesn't come off by pulling; do I need to push a pin or something to remove it?

From the propeller end I removed the prop nut, lock and thrust washers, but the prop is stuck; looks like some kind of sealant other than grease on the shaft. I tried warm soapy water, CLR, rubber mallet, and ball peen hammer to no avail.

If I get a prop puller will this give me access to the entire lower unit and gears or do I need to yank the driveshaft off somehow from the top?

Thanks!
