bought a new outdrive gasket set today. looked it up and it seemed that it was merc #27-94996Q2 so i bought one. the guy at the shop told me he thought my 1986 aplha 1 gen 1 needed the older style that had 2 holes on each side. the one i thought it was had 3 on one side and 2 on the other. the one he thought i needed said it fir pre-alpha up to 1982. when i got home i took the old gasket off and it has 3 holes on one side and mathes the one i bought. but i don't see where that 3rd hole even matters. on the outdrive there is no hole that matches up with that 3rd hole so would it even matter? the reason i ask is that the original owner gave me an extra gasket and it had an old broken one with it and they had 2 holes. here is the ID# on the engine 0A593759

Not to worry, it will fit and work correctly The 3rd hole is for the oil res bottle dribble fitting.mainly used on the GEN II drive

Ayuh,.... I buy the gasket sets for the Alpha, Gen.II, 'n use 'em on All the drives, right back to the ole MC-1s,...
Sierra 18-2619-1, available right here at iboats, or yer local Napa,...
They work, 'n seal properly on All of 'em,...
Though with the MC-1s, the gasket sticks out past the castin's,.. Don't hurt a thing,...

Merc superceded the old gasket for the new. Even if you look up the old number, it supercedes to the new. Any shop holding the old style gaskets are holding old stock. Merc haven't supplied the old gaskets for about 20 years!

i had the outdrive serviced in 2015 when i bought the boat. a local merc dealer did it and it had the newer 3 hole gasket. the PO ave me a gasket but it was the 2 hole. he was the original owner so who knows how long he had it laying around (boat is a 1986). that gasket is brownish paper with no orange sealant or anything like that, just the brown gasket material so it may be quite old. i'm not using that one but was confused as to why it only had 2 holes

2 holes are the drive studs. The third hole on the starboard side is for the later (Gen II) drives with an oil monitor... New style gasket is backward compatible with old drives, but old gaskets are not forward compatible with new drives..... If you have an old 'paper' gasket without the orange sealer around the edge, bin it now....
