Merc one outdrive reseal and impeller?

I have no history on my '76 Merc One outdrive although it looks to be in excellent shape on the exterior. I think I should tear it apart to check it out. There are two things that make me think it is necesssary:

One is I've burned an exhaust boot (I'll check the risors) and I do not know the state of the impeller. (they are bitty little things compared to the OMC impellers)

The other is that the fluid is a little milky from the one day trip this boat got this summer. Prior to that trip, I pulled some fishing line out of the prop shaft seal.

Are there kits that provide all the seals you'd need along with a the necessary impeller goodies, or do you buy each thing seperately?

Boomer,..... The COMPLETE, reseal Kits, upper,+ lower,....
And the Impeller Kit, or a complete Waterpump Kit will run you a Couple Hundred bucks,........
That's Not so Bad,.....
The Tools required to do it even remotely Right will cost you the price of a Replacement Drive.........
I mean, a Waterpump Kit, or a Propshaft seal is an easy doable thing,....
But a Total Tear-down,+ Reseal,......
Ya gotta do like I do,..... I got a Guy that does them in his Garage after working on them all day at the marina,......
$150.00,+ I supply the Parts,.........

Otherwise,.... You're Really not going to Enjoy owning a Black Anchor..............

prior to takein it apart, ya might want to do a pressre test and vac test. that will let ya know for sure that ya need to take it apart for a reseal, maybe yer lub was just a bit areated from the run the prior day. the premium looks that way to me too, milky, but i think it's just areated after the run the prior day. i don't think i had a seal leak. the high performance don't seem to get areated lookin as much.
yer more ambisious than i am boomyal. the impeller aint to hard to R&R, do the lower houseing too. check for oil seal wear on the drive shaft at the bottom of the lower houseing. look for a oil seal wear at the top of the drive shaft too, and the corispondin oil seal in the upper. the only thing on the upper that can be R&Red w/o takin the upper off or apart. the seals is another thing. i've read the proceedure and yer gonna need some merc tools i think. do ya got the oem manual? that will be instrumental for doin that job i'd think. and no, i have not done a reseal myself. aint got the tools is my excuse. not that i need one as i do have a spent drive around that needs to be tore apart too. maybe this winter. if i feel so inclined and want to get further educated.
sounds like ya do have a sealin issue if yer gettin milky after one run, if it's milky. i don't think the burned exhust boot will cause seals to go out though i don't know that for a fact. the fishin line might take out the propshaft seal i'd think, and don't know that for a fact either.....
ya might see if yer flappers are still there too when yer doin the exhust boot. after the exhust boot is the flappers. both boats i've had had the flappers gone(melted off the flapper shaft i assume) along with semi melted exhust boots from an overheat condition........
don't know about the parts availablity thing. i've only done the impeller part. all the parts needed for that job came with the mercruiser impeller kit i got from my dealer. might have been serria i don't know. my dealers been known to sub me serrria parts when i want oem... oh well.....parts is parts i guess if they fit........let us know how it goes. i will be interested in yer outcome as i got the model I too......one good, & one bad..... good luck......and let me know what tools i need to buy :).... so far i can think of three at least and i ain't lookin at the book....

thats why i aint took it apart. i don't know if i want to have that much fun......:)

don't know if i have that much money to have that much fun would be even closer......:):) aftermarket drives look better and better at that point too....gotta agree.....

still, i do have a drive that's just beggen to be tore down too. it's a basket case. startin with, it won't hold pressure and gear lub in the bellows, seals. and a known bad drive shaft, seal wear. not to mention the chunks out of the vent plate for havein a stupid hydofoil attatched to it. and whatever else that i aint even hip to yet.........
man, if i could just snag up some tools...the merc dealer shadow board makes my mouth water.................

Ouch bond-o. Sounds like once ya get past the impeller, it 's worse than an OMC. I'll do the pressure test first, then I'll go for the impeller inspection/replacement.

Ziggy, I did not mean to imply that the the leaking exhaust boot caused any drive leakage, but a worn impeller might have caused the boot leak.

Is there a readily available generic tool to do the pressure/vacuum test with?

certainly i'd agree to that....meltdown.......i've got two boots. i suppose i should have replaced mine. but one was better than the other. one looked melted enough, i'd have got a new one if the other one didn't look serviceable......enough......assumein i don't overheat again............

oem makes some nice tools. for the pressure and vac test...$$
i used a brake vac pump for the vac test. and a bicycle pump hooked up to a merc lower unit oil pump with a psi gage t'ed into it....someones got a pic on here for ya... hope they post it...i just copyied the pic......but don't have it. the pic that is.......
