Merc oil injected...no tank

I inherited a 1997 sea rayder jet boat. I know the boat runs great. But i'm sure my father use to put oil in the gas. Its a merc 175xr2 oil injected motor. The manual says to fill the tank on the motor with oil and as the motor is used it uses the oil automatically. But it looks like the oil tank isn't there. Does this make any sense?

Welcome to iboats Scott. That is a Mercury OB powerhead sitting on a jet pump, not a Mercruiser. So going to move this over to the Mercury Outboard forum so you can get your question answered.

It's very possible that the pump failed and the system was removed. If that is the case, then it's necessary to run mixed fuel and oil.
You can do an oil pump test to see if it's actually working or not, but if the tank on the engine is missing, then it's a waste of time.
If the pump gear in the power head failed and the pump doesn't work, and the parts are all missing, it's going to cost a lot to put it back. Stick with mixing the fuel and oil in the gas tank. That won't fail.

It's 50:1.
You should know how big your tank is, then just estimate how low it is. Add some of the oil, then put in the gas, and add the remaining oil needed to bring it to 50:1
