Merc model 110 9.8 water pump replacement issues

I have just installed a new impeller in my 1982 9.8 Mercury outboard. All went well except the lower unit is stubborn about sliding back on. Motor is in forward. Any idea what I should do now?

put some grease on the top of the shaft (not a ton but enough to help it slide in, make sure the lower unit is in forward
and slowly rotate the prop the splines should line up and drop in place letting it slide up. Also make sure the water tube is lined up as you slide it up.

All went well, thanks for the tip. Shouldn't there be a seal of some sort where the lower unit goes on? There was not one on the motor when I took it apart.
