this is the port motor maybe 1977 with serial #4873356 this # was found on tag riveted above the starter on top of the edge where fly wheel huosing is. the #stamped on the block directly above starter is 2770087 . have # 2730901 on sticker for sterndrive id see photo dont know what this part is called.

There is no way to track down what engine it is by serial number alone. Merc has no searchable records for that for dealer or anyone else. It's just too old for that.
What you need to do is post some pictures of the engine, and a discription of the engine. Simply saying a 4 cylinder, or a V8 will not be enough. There are 3 different 4 cylinders and several different V8's.

dont know if this will help but i have a number from the inside of one of the pistons 2321 and some pics . last pic is staboard motor complete minus water pump

Ayuh,... It's a 140hp, 3.0l, 181cid Chevy/ Merc...

I could be mistaken, but that looks like your basic 3 liter (140). It could be a 120.

I know you didn't ask, but make sure you get rid of the inline fuel filter. I would suggest installing a fuel / water separater instead.

It's not a 120 due to it's having a vibration dampner on the crankshaft. The 120's only used a pulley.

Your 4873356 serial number is in the block of 3.0L (140) serial numbers for 1977.
