Happy holidays to one and all. The weather here ain't too bad. Worked on the boat in about 65 degrees, but cloudy. I just finished
troubleshooting the charge and trigger assem.
on my newly acquired 1983 50hp Merc.

The motor has no fire to the plugs. The tests
revealed that the stator and rectifier are toast. I had pretty well figured this out when I found both stator wires burned into. The trigger test came out fine. In my
limited understanding of electonic systems, I can't figure out whether or not the charging system being down should also kill the ignition. I have a Clymer manual.

I bought the "Tracker" rig at auction and am
trying to get it to run. I've followed the
posts on charging, but haven't found one relating charging and ignition. If I can get
it to run, I'll fix the charging, but I want
to hear noise first.
:D :D

BOB, there is no connection between charging system and ignition system..the wiring inside the stator is separate between the two...one WILL NOT affect the other...

Thanks OD! Now does anyone have a great way to troubleshoot the ignition. Clymers is not what I had hoped for. I may need a factory manual.

Re: Merc Ignition vs. Charging

Thanks everyone :) I got noise! Seems to run quite well. I ran it on the muffs rather than a trip to the bayou, as the day wasn't really that nice (cloudy and 60ish). Next in the continuing saga will be the removal and replacement of the steering cable. It won't
budge! Anyone got any majic to free it up?

I think I did okay for my $495 now ;)

Happy New Year one and all!!

CUT THE PLASTIC OFF THEN PUT IT IN A
TRASH CAN.
IF YOU HAVE ABOUT 5 TO 10 GALLONS OF OIL
THEN FIIL IT UP AND LET IT SAT FOR ABOUT A
WEEK OR TWO.
I DID THESE TO MY SON'S BOAT AND I HAD MY
DOUBT'S BUT IT SAVED HIM ABOUT $200.00.
IT MIGHT WORK AND IT MIGHT NOT.
IT DID FOR JEREMY MY SON AND ALL YOU SEEN WAS SMILE ON HIS FACE.
JUST GOT LUCKY.
GOOD LUCK
REX

P.S. CHECK WITH ONE OF THE OIL CHANGE PLACES TO SEE IF YOU CAN GET SOME USED OIL FOR A WEEK
OR TWO.

Hi TB:

If you want to free up that cable, try this...

>>Install safety glasses!!!
>get a piece of heater hose that will just fit over cable (nut pushed back)
>slide it over until it reaches the outer jacket, then clamp in place
>tip up hose to fill with penetrating oil
>install shop air nozzle, and clamp in place
>put a pail under steering box to catch mess
>apply air until fluid comes out of steering box
>if you used long enough hose, you will be able to work cable back and forth while still connected
>pending on how bad, you may have to let it sit for awhile
>be sure to have safety glasses on incase hose pops off and sprays you!!!

Good Luck!! :)
Thanks, I got it unstuck by tapping and working in and out. Relubed the motor end.
Works but it's stiff. I think I'll try
"Schm's" method when it quits raining.

After a pleasant trip to St. Thomas and St. Maarten, I tried Schm's method. Hooked up the appropriate size hose, added AT fluid and a gradual amount of air pressure until it reached 100#'s. Never did come through the other end, but it freed up enough to use. Weaher here unbelievable. Hit 85 today.
Ya'll come!!!

Thanks to "Shm" and all other contributers.

Schematic, when I use your method, I mix STP motor honey, ATF, and Blaster. Works good also on sterndrive shift cable.
