Re: merc ign analyzer values?

Hi gents

The confusion is coming from the differences in setup between an analog and a digital ohmmeter. The analog (needle style) meter uses Rx1, Rx10 Rx100 etc. as multipliers of the numbers read on the face. The reason for this is because the meter only has a limiter scale for readings. In other words, if the reading you got off the meter is 27, if the meter is set to Rx1, it means multiply your reading by 1 = 27ohms. If the range was set for Rx100, the reading you got would mean 2700 ohms. The Rx? is simply the value you multiply you reading by.

The important thing here is to be aware of the reading value you are expecting.

If you are expecting a reading between 0 - 100 use the Rx1 scale.
If you are expecting a reading between 100 - 1000 use the Rx10 scale.
If you are expecting a reading between 1000 - 10000 use the Rx100 scale.
*try to adjust the range so that the reading you get is in or near the center of the meters face.(most accurate area)

If you are using a digital meter, use the following as a rough guide......

If you expect a resistance between 0 - 199 use the 200 range.
If you expect a resistance between 100 - 1999 use the 2K range.
If you expect a resistance between 1000 - 19999 use the 20k range.

*regarding both meters, if you don't know what to expect for a reading, start with a high scale and work your way down until you are on the lowest scale that still gives you a visible reading. The lowest useable scale for your component will give the most accurate reading....

eg. Rx1000 or the 20K range are not good choices for measuring 10 ohms.....

Hope this helps :)

Re: merc ign analyzer values?

good stuff....i forgot schematic is everywhere! ok, so i can add this: the testing of ohms/resistance will require batteries in your tester, just a thought... ;)

Re: merc ign analyzer values?

So RX 1000 = 10,000 - 100,000 and on the digital meter the setting would be 200K?
Everything Ive tested so far called for R X 100, and with my digital meter set on 20k came to specs. But everything Ive tested That calls for R X 1000 and that should give me a reading of 0 has given me O.F.(overflow), both on manual and autoranging. I will check my meter to make sure is goes high enough. 200K?
Thank You.

Re: merc ign analyzer values?

tamarackstyle

It sounds to me like you are measuring leakage to ground, or shorts to ground. This would require the Rx1000 scale and would result in a reading of infinity not Zero. (no meter movement) The equivalent reading on your digital meter would be "OL" ( Out of Limits)
OL on your meter, while on ohms 200K, means infinity....... :)

Don't get confused on Zero versus Infinity....

Re: merc ign analyzer values?

thanxs schematic. Is it really that cold up there? I drove thru there in Feburary (Michigan to Alaska) And I must say that was the coldest place on earth, -60 when I came thru. So cold It cracked my dash in two places. So cold that I would drive for hours and when I pulled over my choke would shut. Now thats cold.
