Re: Merc, fuel additive question...

Man, that's a million dollar question. There are a lot of fuel additives out there and twice as many opinions to go along. Here's my knowledge/expierence: you want to stay away from carbon build-up. What happens is that carbon builds up under the piston rings and pushes them out and they eventually snag on the ports and break off, so you want a fuel additive that combats carbon build up. I have heard that Sea Foam, and Techron do an excellent job of keeping the rings clean, but that Yamaha Ring Free is the best there is. I do not have any strong opinion, and I am certainly not trying to advertise, but I do use Ring Free and haven't ever had a problem. Maybe coincidence, maybe not. I dunno the science behind it all, and I am no chemical engineer, but it seems to me that there is techron (which breaks down carbon) and other detergents in the gasoline already, so I am sure that helps a lot too. In the end, without extensive research, you are going by hearsay and opinion. If you find any facts, let me know, cause I am sure curious!!

Karl,
Thank for your thoughts! Newbee to the boating world and this being my first fuel fill up, I wasn't sure If I needed to add a oil additive to the gas, didn't want motor seize that all.. I have to study I guess... haha! for some reason who ever I ask couldn't give me a strait answer! But thanks for the heads up though I'll keep that in mind... thanks...

Re: Merc, fuel additive question...

A Two stroke, or 2 cycle engine requires oil in the fuel. Most modern ones inject in into the fuel so it is held in a supply tank.

A 4 stroke, or 4 cycle engine has an oil bath setup in the crankcase, where oil is held in the engine and theoretically not consumes. No additive is needed in the fuel.

Good clean fuel, of sufficient octane rating is needed. You need not add anything to the fuel. If you have a 4 stroke, check the engine oil as a maintainance item, looking for either loss or gain. (gain would be water in the oil) If it's a 2 stroke, make sure the oil reservoir has ample oil. A 3 gallon oil tank holds enough oil to run 150 gallons or more of fuel.

The comment about carboning up above refers to 2 stroke pre-mix as opposed to direct injection engines. They coke up and need periodic cleaning to maintain performance.

Most of the tune-up type additives increase performance by lightening your wallet.

hope it helps

John,

Absolutely 100 percent correct. I mis read the part about this being a 4 stroke. I think I was really tired. SORRY!
