o.k guys here's the important info: 72 merc 650- not charging battery-what i've done:i had supisions that the system wasn't charging due to some flat batteries, replaced the battery ,found stator wires were completly rotted with no insulation, replaced the wires best i could, i cut what was left of the wires right at the stator and replaced with new, excuse me for calling things "boxes"but until somebody tells me what these "boxes" are called i will just reffer to them as such, the two stator wires run to a epoxy filled box "box" with a volt-meter i'm showing 6+ volts coming off each side of the stator, the epoxy "box" which the stator wires are going to has a red wire going from there to a bigger "box" on the front of the motor,i really don't know where to go from here,i also did the old auto charging test, took the groung off while the motor was running and it dies instantly, ive ordered myself a manual which hopefully has some electrical troubleshooting guides in it and if any body can tell me what these boxes are called that would help also.thanks in advance.jim

I'll give you an answer, or at least try. According to the wiring diagram which is listed by serial number, the red wire from the rectifier goes to the switch box. The two wires (yellow/Red) coming from the stator are alternating current generated by the magnets under the flywheel. The rectifier changes this to direct current. You should have at least 12+ volts between the red wire terminal (marked by a + symbol next to the post) and ground. There should be another red wire from the switch box where the first red wire hooks and goes to the positive side of the battery through the wiring harness. If you are thoughly confused now I can e-mail the diagram to you.
Hope this helps.

RIDEPLATE..that little box is a rectifier ..go buy a new one.. if it wasnt toast before, it popped when you unhooked the battery with the motor running...

I agree with both replies, only some motors have another wire connected to yellow/red, which is a brown wire and goes to tach (I just find out since my tach wasn't working)

I definitely suggest to replace rectifier.

Other suggestion is to NEVER disconnect battery when motor is running.

Val

CAPT. RON, thanks for the reply, yes if you would please e-me the diagram i would appreciate it- ridepate@hotmail.com -o.k i'm following you so far but as far as a wire from positive on switchbox to battery there is not one, only one wire comes from the rectifier to the switchbox there are two other wires on different posts on the switchbox but just one wire from the rec.you know i wondered about this, after tracing wires i noticed there is no wire going to the battery for charge, i do have 16+ volts frome the rectifier at the red wire going to the switchbox???
