Is it possible to make a cheap scan tool for reading the EFI codes off a mercruiser 350 tow sports 2003 model.

Something like explained at this link with a paper clip and LED or voltmeter to read the signal flashes:

http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/...ke-marine-efi-code-tool-less-than-1-00-a.html

There is mention that this will not work with 555 ECM engines in the link above. I think the two sport 350 is in this category.

I got a double warning beep going off and wanted to read the codes out so is there a method anyone has without an official reader ?

Your engine has the ECM555 so you should probably try to not stick paperclips in the connector!

Re: merc EFI Code tool.

I found another reference here to this same info in a past thread.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=49800

It does not let me know if this will work with my particular engine. I guess i am trying to find this out before i attempt it and so i do not brake anything.
Rodbolt's answer in post 11 of that that last link you posted is your answer, you can not pull any information with a paper clip with a 555 PCM/ECM.

One of the only ways you can get any info is from having something like a MerCruiser Scan Tool, Bought from someone like Rinda technologies.;)

hmmm ok so MEFI is different to the 555 ECM.

Any way to diagnose the warning beeps without a scan tool.

I got a copy of mercruiser 555 EFI manual, but i dont have a scan tool.

There are a lot of warning 2 beeps listed in the manual so it is a bit hard to tell what it could be.

Yes, there is a way to read the codes without shelling out for the scantool.

You call a certified tech who has a scantool and let him do it for you.
Easiest and cheapest!

There are only 5 ways to do it.

1. Mercruiser CDS diagnostic software + laptop
2. Mercruiser DDT scan tool
3. Rhinda Diacom Software + laptop
4. Rhinda Techmate scan tool
5. OTC 4000E scan tool with Merc cartridges + cables. The OTC 4000E is the same as the DDT, but does not come with the software and cables.

What about a smartcraft gauge. They seem to be cheaper then the other scan tools.

Not 100% sure if they show the fault codes though.

Smartcraft is not a diagnostic tool. Sorry, but it takes a scan tool the check these systems, there are no cheap short cuts. The Techmate is about the cheapest tool out there, and it checks everything. Just a bit slower than the other systems posted by Jason. I have one, and wouldn't trade it for a laptop.
