merc cruser alpha no reverse

I have a 1989 120 merc cruser 4 cylnder, the problem Iam having is I cant get it to go into reverse, also kill the engine, forward works fine, the cable seems to be working, and moving the dog on the outdrive, any suggestions.

sounds like you have an issue with your shift cable or your shift interrupt switch.

The switch is designed to kill the engine for a moment in order to allow it to shift into reverse.

If the cable is old and sticky , or out of adjustment it can cause the switch to stay engaged killing the motor.

if you search around this forum, and check out your service manual (available as a download in the "adults only" section)

you may be able to fix the problem.

Lower shift cable needs to be replaced. Also the shift shaft bushings need to be replaced using the new-style, which seal out water much better.
