Merc Cruiser alpha 1 tilt trim motor stuck

Hi,<br /><br />We have a 1986 Merc Cruiser 140 hp alpha 1 unit. The tilt trim motor is getting juice like it should but the motor is stuck. The manual I looked and didn't have anything on cleaning the motor.<br /><br />What could I do to fix it? What would a used unit cost here in Florida?<br /><br />Thanks. Bob

I believe that year model has the square motor on the pump. Remove the bolts holding the motor frame to the pump and remove the motor. Clean the armature (copper looking that brushes ride on) with sandpaper till they look clean (like a new penny) Make sure the brushes are still connected to the wires in the motor (they break off sometimes). Re-install and see if she works. Most time the connection that you cleaned are just dirty. A rebuilt motor is around 150.00 as Bondo said.<br /><br /> Trim motor

Trent,<br /><br />Thanks for the reply. I didn't know the motor could come out without the pump. I looked at the units you referred me too. Mine doesn't look the same. It is about 6 inches high and about 2 1/2 or 3" square all the way to the base. There are 4 long rods in the corners from top to bottom. Are these the ones I should take out to remove the motor? I'm thinking that only the casing will come off which would make it difficult to put back together. Thanks again. Bob

That's the one. Remove the nuts if I remember correctly or bolts and the motor will come off of the pump.

Trent,<br /><br />Thanks for the help on the electric motor. It works ok now. We got the gas engine running, the trim motor working, now for the leak. Thanks again. Bob.
