I can not find anything in manual that helps me make sense of it...this is a 50hp mercury with mercury controls on a pontoon boat figured I mention it not sure if it matters...thanks in advance Phil

i'm not familar with that control, but some will be. start a new thread with the title, "trouble with Merc Binnacle control", repost the pics, will get better results, you also might do the same in the I/O forum and explain it is an outboard but the binnacle is used more on I/O's than OBs.

Re: merc control problems

First make sure you don't have the cables reversed. Have someone move the control lever very slightly forward which you watch the cables at the engine. The first cable to move is the shift lever, not the throttle. If the throttle linkage is moving you have the cables reversed. If the shift linkage is moving first, the cables are ok. Next, make sure the cables are adjusted properly. There are a couple ways to do that but what works for me, is to put everything in neutral. Disconnect the shift cable at the engine. Hold the end of the cable up to its attachment point and then adjust the threaded barrel until the two points align perfectly. Attach the cable. If you have to push or pull the cable to attach it you did it wrong. The process is the same for the throttle. Make sure the throttle linkage is against it's idle stop when making the adjustment.

Re: merc control problems

nice job, you didn't over crowd it. i've always wanted to do a toon. just haven't found one yet. i would like to find around a 20 footer and put my 88spl on it and sell my center console hull. i would like enough room to put 2 sofa seats one facing forward, and the other back, with a removable table, and keep all the rail open, to walk around, and make docking easy and fish anywhere in the boat.
