I don't know too much about old outboards, but if it has electric start it most likely has the ability to charge your batteries. If it does, it won't be very much, my '74 150hp only has something like 9 amps...and most of that is used up to keep the engine running.

hiy
Like they say if it's electric started they have the ability to load the battery :)
I've owned a 650 too, allthough I don't know the exact year of build(4 cyl with a red striping around engine cover).
It ran 3 years with the same battery.
Check your battery and the load to battery.
Mine was a great engine :D :D (more bad luck with next, the"suzy" )
Gtzzz

Tirett

Just in case, this is good food for thought. I always keep a set of jumper cables in my boat next to my fuel tank.

thunderfed

I think that older Merc may have a magneto ignition that does not use the battery for ignition power, so it may not charge the battery.

Look on the right side of the engine, up under the flywheel and see if you can glimpse a round ring that may remind you of an ignition coil. That ring will have two wires coming out of it, that are routed down along the side of the engine and then forward to a small black box (rectifier)that is in turn wired in to the switch box.

If you see this "stuff" then the engine does charge the battery.

If you have a volt meter (you can buy one at Wal Mart or Radio shack for about $20) check the battery voltage without the engine running, and then with the engine running.

Good Luck,

Gold Bear ;)

Its has a charging system. Stator and rectifier are no longer available from Mercury.

new style rectifier will work just fine...
diff. shape so needs a small bracket to mount.
they cost $35 new.

Re: Merc battery charge?

I bought a '71 650 recently and I believe the ignition is the same as yours. I was told that it didn't charge and I immediately checked the rectifier and found it was bad. When I bought a replacement I was sold a newer unit for $40 that didn't fit. Fortunately I had a high power full wave bridge in my parts collection and mounted it onto the old rectifier block as a heatsink/mount. Worked like a charm. The rectifier can be easily damaged and is a prime candidate for replacement.
The replacement part with a bracket would be the easiest fix if not a bit pricey. I have a voltage meter on my panel and I find it invaluable.
