Here is a list of the manuals for all Alpha style drives.
1963 - 1973. All engines and drives were in the same manual. Book #1 Merc part number 90-68648 NOT Online
1974 - 1977. All engines and drives were in the same manual. Book #2 Merc Part number 90-71707 NOT Online
1978 - 1982. Merc 120 thru 260 outdrives. These were known as "One drives" (NOT Alpha I). Book #4 Merc part number 90-86137 NOT Online.

Service bulletin 84-24
1983 - 1990 Merc R, MR, Alpha I outdrives. Commonly known as the pre-Alpha and Alpha drives. The transom shields, bellhousings and drives are similar in general appearance, but different from the One drives.
The manual is #6 and is online Service Manual #6
1991-Present Merc Alpha I Gen II outdrives. Completely different, but similar to the Alpha I, and parts are not interchangeable.
The manual is #14 and is online Service Manual #14
