I'm thinking of buying an old Mercury 90 V-6. The serial number is A150261.

Can anyone tell me...

1. What year is it (and how did you find out)?
2. What kind of reputation does this engine have?
3. Where do I get the best shop manual for this engine?

Hoping someone can help me out - at least with the age.

Sincerely, Kristian

Re: Merc 90 - what year?

KRISTIAN,this motor has to be an inline six ,the lowest h.p. v-6 is a 135. these engines are known for detonation ,mostly on #1, 3, 5, cyl. do a compression test before purchase ! order a merc manual from a merc dlr. if you do buy it, lower the wide open throttle timing by 2 degrees, this will help keep it from detonating. also get it pitched at 5500 rpm with normal load at w. o. t.

Re: Merc 90 - what year?

Thanks, you two. It's a fantastic way to get help from people who really know.
I'm also a newbie, so I hope you don't mind me asking where you find out about this stuff. I mean, where did you look to find out how old this engine is and how do you know about this engines reputation for detonating?

Sincerely Kristian kristiant@hotmail.com
