I'm wondering if anyone has run into the same problem I'm having with the tilt on my motor. When I tilt it up to beach the boat, I can't get the motor to stay in the "up" position.

This is the iboats motor I just started running (other thread= http://www.iboats.com/bbboard/bbBoard.cgi?a=viewthread;fid=17;gtid=1098156)
Currently it's at the local Merc dealer near the lake. They called me a couple days ago and said they aren't having any problem getting it to stay up. All I know is that I tried for the better part of a day to get it to stay in the full-up position and it kept slipping back down past the cheap plastic lock/unlock mechanism thingey on one side which isn't shown in the diagram below..

When I looked at it, I could see that the pin (12) was off-center and was only catching well on one side of the notched bracket . In fact it is so off-center that there is a shallow gouge worn into one side of the bracket from the pin (from lots of up and down motion) before I owned it.

Anyway, I'll be going to the marina next week and will look at it again with them there. I explained when I dropped it off what I thought the problem was.

Anyone have this problem before with this motor?

I am having the same problem on my 1997 6hp, like you posted the bar moves of center and the motor falls. I was wondering if it is the spring on the bar? Did you find a solution I could use one myself.

2006 that's a old post. On my 9.9 has to do with being in gear or out can't remember which way.

I have a 98 Mariner 9.9 that I was having the same problem with. What I discovered is that you have to lift the outboard slowly and when you hear the click just hold it in place and then slowly release the pressure. Mine seems to stay up if I do it that way. Sounds silly but it works for my outboard. Like you I spend a bit of time trying to figure this crap out. See if it works.
