I was in the neighborhood of the water pump on my 9.9 merc and noticed the shaft seals between the gear lube side and the water side looked shabby. I bought new seals but I am worried that the running surface on the shaft may be damaged. There is a slight ammount of wear and pitting. Very slight I might add. Is this a problem? Also, Should I go ahead and replace the prop shaft seal too? Looks like I need a special tool to do it.

BTW. I was thinking of filling in some of the pitted areas with JB-Weld and emery clothing the resulting surface down. Is this technique too much of a Jerry-Rig? I priced a shaft and found that it does not come lubricated.

Hi Bassin
Yea, I agree on the shaft not coming pre-lubed (clever). There is usually enough room to set the seal a little deeper or less deep, depending on whats needed. This will let the lips ride on a new spot on the shaft. Still a good idea to clean up the shaft with fine emory. It's hard to say but from your description it doesn't sound like you need worry too much anyway. Yes as long as your doing it, do it all.

Sweet...thx Mr. alcan. The Seal depth trick is a clever one indeed. I am trying to exploit that rigamaround now that you mentioned it. I can position the seal about two milli deeper than twas before. Didn't think about that one. Should just get me by.
Crappy part is that I think I need a special wrench to get the freaking prop shaft seal out and about. I'm thinking that one should come pre-talcom-powdered.
