I cant get my 2009 Merc 9.9 to start, or even to act like it might start.. The motor appears to be near new, no corrosion anywhere. I checked for spark on both cylinders with an in-line tester, and no spark. I also disconnected the black/yellow wire leading to the kill and tiller stop switches and still no spark. It ran and trolled fine two weeks ago on my first outing. Anybody know what I should try next?

My 05 has a small toggle front left it must be in the run position. Someone on here was complaining that he lost the safety lanard on his 09 and he couldn't start it... All this safety is going to KILL us. I am recomending seat belts on toilets.

I'd better check that shift point, I think it has to be in neutral, and I know my tiller markings don't line up good with the shift points. Also, I was wondering if there is a low oil pressure interlock??

Thanks for help.

Low oil preasure will limit your rpms below 2000 not stop motor and you should have a red light near pull cord. I think that the shift position only cuts out the starter selinoid so it won't start in gear on electric start motors. I would check every push pin connector on that motor there are lots of them. The original mercury manual has resitance readings for coils and other ignition parts. It is $70 but it is worth it, you can't afford to pay a tech for general stuff.

OK, I'll check them out. There's a big bundle of them on the right side of the engine, looking aft from inside of the boat at the motor. The only one that I fiddled with so far is the black/yellow line leading to the on off switches, which I temporarily disconnected to see if I got a spark with these switches out of the picture. Thanks for the info.

The red light you mentioned does momentarily flash on when I pull the starter rope, but no spark.
