Ok, I just picked up a 1997 merc 8hp 2 stroke short shaft. My brother in law just picked up a (1990?) merc 8hp 2 stroke short shaft. They both are complete, start, run for about 30sec then die. The carbs are our first stop. We are gonna clean them and see if that helps. My questions are (and yes I have searched) are both of the motors the same? As far as torques, ratings, exhaust, parts? Blocks, carbs, etc...? I was told we could bump them up to 9.9hp by removing a restrictor plate and rejetting. I thought that was for the newer 4 strokes only? Are there any issues, tips, or advise anyone can give us on these motors? We are both new to boating and the motors. Everything looks great and about the same on both motors but I need to make sure they are the same or if not find out the differences. Searching brings up a bunch of random info but Im not sure if and/or what has changed between the years for the merc 8hp. I bought an older evinrude 9.5hp lastweek but it didnt workout. I have a merc dealer 5 miles from me if needed, but I like to know what Im talking about and prefer to work on my own stuff.
