Merc 898 lower Case repair

Friends boat again! It has an epoxy patch on the lower outdrive. It is holding but would be nice to be able to weld it up. Can this be done without disassembling the unit?

I wouldn't. First, it can't be welded if the oil is in there. Second, any metal drips, slag, splatter, grindings from prepping the area for welding and from the welding can't be in the drive. Too much heat to fill in that big an area could distort the bearing area.
