Merc 850

hi all i have a mercury 850 85hp serial 7200011 not sure what year if anybody knows could you post my prob is i check battery and its 12.60 volts after i run engine it drops off to 12.30 i changed the rectifier and re checked and now it reads 12.80 when running is this normal or should i be putting out more volts than that i am running 2 batteries motor on 1 everything else on another thanx

I think its a 1977 but a good merc parts man should be able to confirm this try your local dealer.I think these older motors had an unregulated charging system & as long as you are putting in more than youtake out you dont have a problem

thanx for replys all i hope that is right 1st time out in lake erie engine would not start(dead battery) after 30 min fishing had to get towed back in by coast guard thank god for vhf radio since then seperated everything to diff batt and bought a powerpack just in case i will have to check volts coming out at top speed to see if it does go up
