Merc 850 lower unit

I replaced my water pump and am trying to reassemble the lower unit on my 76 merc 850. The water tube that goes upto the motor has a small tube at the end. Do you just break this off and install the new longer one? I can't get the tube lined up with the pump cover while raising the lower unit.

Thats a guide that goes in the top of the w/pump housing to guide the copper tube in to the rubber grommet.
