merc 85 lower unit

Help... I am having trouble putting the lower unit back on after replacing the water pump. I had the gear in forward when I took it off. Now when I get it back together and put it in neutral the prop will still only turn in the clockwise direction, shouldn't it turn easily in both directions. When I have the lower unit off how do I tell when the shift rod on lower unit is in forward. Thanks for any help you can give. gls

Hello <br />I have a Marina 75 hp 1984 it will automaticaly go into revers when lower unit is down.<br />So when unit is down put your shifter in revers and put back the lower unit.<br />I hope this help you<br />mikael
