I just bought a 71' Merc 800 outboard, guy said it never had reverse gear, I had it running ok in forward now it just idles even when given full throtle. Out of water, you can turn the prop by hand, is that normal? Also is the motor supposed to lock down once you get moving, do you have to pull pin to unlock it(no power trim)? I appreciate any advice.

Re: merc 800 shift problem?

Take the cowl off and watch the throttle as you speed it up could be loose or unhooked part may be obvious. It is normal to be able too move prop by hand. Not sure on a merc but I believe as you shift to reverse the motor locks if you put it in forward you should be able to tilt. Spike
