I need some input from you folks out there that have some knowledge about these 2 mid-size engines. I will be buying one of these for an all welded rig that is rated for 75.
Yamaha is a little more bucks but weighs almost a hundred pounds less, a real plus
when hanging on the rear of a small(17')rig.
I have had both brands and am really pleased
with the V Max that I have on my larger boat.I have tried posting on some of the bass fishing boards and only received on reply by a merc rebuilder in Penn. who stated
the Yamaha was a real "toad". Now thats a helpful comment. Thanks in advance for you help.
:D

Just the weight difference is enough for me! Go with the Yammy. As a side note, we have a huge fleet of charter/sport fisherman here, and both an established Yamaha dealer and a Mercury dealer. 4 out of 5 boats run the Yammys, and have for years. I like Mercs fine, but when those guys won't run 'em, I have to wonder. Just my observation! As for the toad part? I have no idea! ;)

I owned a 1996 75 HP Mariner, it was a good motor but ran rough at low revs. others have told me they have noticed the same. i now have a 1998 70HP Yamaha with 1,650 Hours on the clock and still running great, the yammy is quieter and smoother running than the mariner was. i would'nt hesitate to recommend yamaha to anyone.
Hope this helps,
Terryc
