I just replaced my starter on my 1993 454 merc because I was having starting issues. Now when I accelerate the boat it will not rev over 3000. It starts to pop out the carb. I know popping out of the carb is a spark problem. My question is could the starter be causing this problem. The new starter looked a little different it had a small post then the large battery cable post and a small post this is on the solenoid and on the starter part another small post. The way it is hooked up now is the battery cable and the small post to the right( facing the back of the boat) the old starter just had the battery post on the solenoid and the post on the starter. I threw away the old starter

Oh my... I'm having difficulty understanding your description of the new starter.

Explain what color the wires are connected to your starter...and where they're connected (which post).

Walt

Re: Merc 7.4 L bravo II

when you look at the back of the starter this is what you see
post

1 2 3

4

Post 2 goes to the battery (Red) and post 3 goes to the ignition(orange with yellow stripe I think) the old starter only had post 2 and 4. Post 1, 2 and 3 are very close.
