I've got a 92 Crownline w/the 7.4 Merc. Bravo with an unusual problem. We lost charging and discovered the BAT terminal on the alternator was corroded, burned and separated from the wire. I soldered in a new connector, but its only charging enough to run the ignition; if you turn anything else on the voltmeter drops dramatically. Also the wire is hot to the touch. I've successfully repaired many Delco automotive alternators, but this is something I'm unfamiliar with. Any help greatly appreciated.

As I see it...you have two choices. Send your alternator in for repair or replace it.

I suspect the reason the alternator isn't charging properly is there's still major resistance at the output terminal. This would also explain why that terminal gets hot. It sounds like you've done what you can to repair it...don't feel badly that it didn't work. Marine electrical components are not your standard automotive parts... What works for a car won't always work on a boat...

Good luck...

Walt

Walter,
Thanks for the input. We proceeded as you have suggested; we bought a new alternator. As others told me no local rebuilder would touch it, a liability issue. We upgraded to a higher amp unit, and are very happy with results (but not the price, argh!) Thanks again.

Well...when I said marine components are not your typical automotive parts...I failed to mention the price difference will prove that point quite well.

Glad to hear you're up and running again!

Walt
