Merc 650 Fuel Delivery Fuel tank placement
I am dealing with a '69 650, has run great, perfect. Last week I wired, solderd, in a new ignition wiring harness to the distributor. The old wires were really soft and starting to break off at the top of the distributor.

At the same time I moved the fuel tanks to the bow of the boat about 20' away. After running the boat on a 6 hour ocean trip the thing started to cut out, just like you were turning the switch on and off, and then just stopped. I pumped the bulb which felt soft, but it wouldn't start for about 10 minutes, ran for 10 minutes then repeated the dying and restarting stuff.
Oh, there is a auto style in line fuel filter near the motor and there is hardly any visible fuel in it when it runs. Sorry for the long post , I want to give you guys all the info.

Can the little fuel pumps on the 650 be expected to pump fuel 20 feet. If not can I put a low pressure pump near the tanks? Is the auto type filter too restrictive?

What are your ideas guys? Thanks in advance.
