I did get a new shift lever and have removed carb to get at the lever nut and got it off plus the retaining spring by where lever went thru lower case-shift lever seems to be ready to slide out but it wont move.i really don't want beat on it too hard I did tap at it but it seems to be stuck on good...I do not have a service manual yet
any help in removing shift shaft or any special method would be super...

Re: merc 6 hp twin

the outboard is a 1961 6hp twin...shaft part number is 30747...and is called the shift control handle..it looks as if it just been there 51 years and it doesn't want to come out...

UPDATE:i drove the shaft out after oiling it and held it on the backside as I tapped it and it popped out.re-installation is complete.
