Merc 50hp stator tests.

I am trying to prove a fault to a stator on a 50hp 1980 Merc. As my DVM will not do peak readings, I think I can test the stator by checking resistance across the low speed and high speed windings. Can anyone advise the acceptable resistance readings on both of these please.

To give further detail, one winding reads 20 ohms whereas the other reads 1.5 kohms. Is this right ? I have weak spark on 1&2 and have replaced the switchbox, swapped the coils but the condition remains and when attempting to open the throttle she hesitates and dies.
