Okay guys,
Got good feedback on the cost of having my lower unit re-sealed (water in lube/oil). Next question is, can this be done yourself? I'm pretty mechanical...any special tools required? Is this too much of a PIA? Advice appreciated.
Yea you can do it. It calls for a special tool or two. Mostly a pin socket spanner arrangement thing. But with some heat from a propane torch (if needed) and a drift punch and hammer they come apart.

Here's a poor man's tool.

Pick up a manual cause there are a few things such as shims and things that if they get mixed up on you, you are going to want to be able to check for correctness.
Will i glad you call around.
There one little thing you can try, but I
would have the dealer put the seal in.
I like I said $1.00 for lube is not to bad
to see if the seal will seal.
Just do it every time you are on the water.
After 2 or 3 time you will know if it starting
to work.
P.S. you could add about a tablespoon of
brake fluid with it to try and make the seal
soft.
Rex A. Thanks for the input, guys. I have a service manual coming, so I'll decide after looking at the diagrams and seeing how many little parts there are. I suspect the water pump/driveshaft seal, but could also be the shift shaft seal. don't suspect the prop seal.
Hey rex...couldn't follow what remedy you were talking about. How about a little more explanation?
Yepblaze,
I like that homemade tool! I'm guessing that's what gets you into the stuff on the prop shaft.
How long is that pipe, what kind of pipe (not alum. obviously) and how far apart are the "teeth?" How did you cut the teeth? thanks.
That came from a guy named Larry Strange's webpage

http://merlincorp.com/~barfitup/

he hangs out at John's old mercury forum at

http://www.pfs-ware.com/kwast/mercboard/index.htm

If you need more help on making the tool or particular items of concern dropp a message at that forum.
Thanks for the info and leads, guys.
Next question, which other lower units are interchangeable with my 50 hp? For example, will a lower unit off a Merc 65 or 80 hp, roughly same vintage/year range, bolt up to my Merc 500?
