Hello! I have a mercury 50, model 1977, 4 cylinder, serial number 9136284, and for now on it works just fine. I want to buy another one for spare parts, so i am interested to find out if anyone knows to tell me if a mercury 50, model 1984-1985 has the same powerhead as my model, and also the rest of it, lower unit etc. Thanks :)

The decals are different but most of the parts are the same.----Make sure the wiring insulation is in good shape.--There were problems with that.

I have the same '77 500 motor. If mine ever goes belly up I would not replace it with the same. Don't get me wrong, it runs well and so far has been reliable. Yes the wiring harness is crap, I just replaced the one from the Mercontrol to the motor this year and I know the inner one is baked now too. The problem with these motors is that many dealers won't work on them. To replace a piston, you have to pull the crankshaft with all 4 pistons and rods attached, and this motor has no removable head. Also weight is an issue, I was told that a newer 40 hp would outrun this 50 easily. Mine also has no power trim which is a bummer.

Those 4 cylinder 50 hp are very well made.-------Easy to find parts for too.-------Remember the saying----" they do not build them like they used to " ---it really applies here !!
