Merc 500 1964?

Just picked up a Merc 50hp, I couldn't see any ID plate, is there any other place I could look to confirm the year it was made.
I will have a go at the restoration as soon as I can find all the information I can about this motor.
Any help would be appreciated.

the serial # is stamped right in the metal on the engine block itself .look around it's there

I have found a number, only just, very hard to see : 1714206.
