I just picked up a 2005 2 stroke 5HP merc. This thing has never touched water and lived in a garage since birth.

The question I have is when looking up parts my serial number falls into the older range of serial numbers but it's really close to the newer range. Does anyone have any konwledge of what changed at that time and if it was significant to the motors operation or performance?

Is there something I should change prior to putting her into service to get more or better performance/reliability out of it?

Mine is right up near the cutoff of OT894438.

Thanks,
Dave

Well, just to close this out. I guess I'm not worried about whatever modifications they did. I ran this motor through the break in procedures in the owner's manual and she runs great. I'll be fishing her a couple days this weekend!!

Hi there, It really would be difficult to say exactly what the changes were between the numbers as it could literally be anything from a running change in production due to a problem found that needed repaired with a new design sometimes found (but not always found) in service bulletins, Could be an internal manufacturer model year designation, cosmetic changes internally or externally, parts catalog changes/updates, etc.

One thing you may want to do it contact Mercury and register the engine in your name so that if there is a known problem, they will be able to send you out the needed information to let you know there is a known problem within your serial number range. Outboard Registration | Mercury Marine

Enjoy your new engine.:)
