We are looking at buying a 1988 Larson cruiser with a merc 5.7 260 hp I/O. During the sea trial the engine got hot. After slowing to idle speed the temp began to lower, but after a short time the engine began to knock. Oil pressure was still good. They said over heating was not unusual for a boat that was in dry storage for a time. The selling agent and surveyor both said the knock did not indicate a major problem...the agent said they would check the impeller and thermostat and fix the problem, but the knock concerns me. Once fixed and we do another sea trial, if the over heating is eliminated and the knock is gone, should everything be okay? The oil analisys results will be back monday.
Thanks for any help I can get on this.

Pops,

RUN don't walk away from anyone trying to tell you that an engine knock is NO big deal.

Go find another boat. The sea trial cooked this one.
