I have a 5.7 Merc I/O alpha drive. The problem is that the engine dies when I put it in neutral from forward or reverse. A mechanic says it needs a new distributor because the vacuum advance is frozen. Looking at the distributor, it has no vacuum advance hose to the carb, it is simply capped at the distributor. Any help?

Ayuh,.... Sounds like you need Atleast 3 things,....
1st off is your Mechanic,....
2nd thing is a Marine Distributer,....
3rd thing is a New Lower Shift Cable.....

Marine Igntions Don't use Vacuum advance on the distributer...
That's why you need a replacement Distributer,+ a Mechanic,.... He should already Know that....

The Symptoms you describe are Classics of a Failed, gummed up lower shift cable,....
It's dragging causing the shift interupter switch to hang up stalling the motor....;)

NEVER EVER GO to that mechanic again. He doesn't have a clue.

What year is this 5.7 Mercruiser, they have only used them for 40 plus years.

Your problem is most likely a faulty lower shift cable. It holds the shift interrupt system engaged too long and the engine dies.
There is a HOW TO on the shift interrupt system up in the Adults Only sticky that will explain it better.
