I'm trying to get access to the seal on the timing cover.

The 3 bolts holding the pulley are rusted and the head is somewhat rounded and cannot be removed. Managed to remove the centre harmonic balancer to crankshaft bolt.

Question:
With the 3 bolts holding the pulley to the balancer still in place, can I use a puller on the harmonic balancer rim?

I know the warning about not pulling on the rim as it can separate the balance weights. But with the 3 bolts in place, its similar to the removal tool arrangement...yes?

Thanks.

qystan

I have had really good success removing rounded bolts with Craftsman "Bolt-Outs".

Dave

Those things (Bolt Outs) are amazing. I had some bolts similar to the one Dave showed and a guy said here try these. I laughed and said something stupid like "You really expect them to work"?

I now own my own set.

No, do not pull on the outside of the pulley or the vib. dampner. IF you do have to, replace both.
Remember, heat is your friend when working on rusty bolts.

That bolt out design is such a no brainer, makes me wonder why I didn't think of it. Seems a reverse of an easy-out. But I also had one of the very first Hula-Hoop's too, and still wondering why....
.....onward, through the fog...

Ayuh,..........

If you Can't get those bolts Out,+ Use a Puller,.............

You're going to Have to Replace, Both the Pulley,+ the Balancer,............
Before you're Done,... You'll be pulling the Hub,.....
That's All that'll be Left.............. ;)

Dave,

Thanks for the bolt-outs tip. Will hold this off until I get them when I drop by LA in mid Dec.

Thanks a zillion.

One thing about boats, you get to own the entire series of tools ever made and loads of spares to justify the tools....all probably to be used once in its entire life......
