Merc 5.0 Is this a sign of a leaky carb?

I just got a 95 Bayliner with the Merc 5.0. Put it last night and it started right up cold and ran good. I then shut it off for about a 1/2 hour to try my trolling motor. I tried to start it without touching throttle since it was still warm and it cranked but did not fire. I then pumped the throttle and the same. I checked spark at the coil and it was good. After trying for a 1/2 hour I gave up and used my free towing ( towboat US there in 15 min!)to get back to dock. When we got it back the owner of the marina jumped in and put throttle to full cranked it and it started! If it is the carb leaking can I get by the rest of this season and have the carb rebuilt in the fall?

Thanks,

it takes about an hour to rebuild a carb. if it is leaking that means you will soon develop other issues from gas running into your motor

however you need to first do some troubleshooting to verify the issue.

Sounds like you were flooded, so next time remember this so you can start it.

and do investigate the carb

Yes next time out I will take off the flame arrestor when warm and see if I can see gas dripping down. At least I know know how to get it started next time! I feel a carb rebuild heading my way. Thanks for all the help on here!

Well I am starting to learn this boat a little better. I have found that most of the time when warm after it has been off for a wile I have to push the throttle wide open and it starts up pretty quick. Of course I have to back off the throttle real quick. When I go to restart after only a couple of minutes I can just hit the key. The boat is running very good no other issues. Is this just an something that is just a characteristic of this boat and nothing to really be concerned about?

Thanks,

IMO no, your carb is leaking fuel and this is why it needs WOT to start after it sits. Fix this issue and you will be better off, but leave as-is and it will continue until it floods more which could be some time, but maybe less
