Merc 5.0 alpha 1. Prop hit bottom, now overheating.

Was in low water at idle speed and my prop hit bottom. Heard a clunk and there is a small nick in the prop.

Boat seems to run fine, but immediately following this the engine started over heating. Usually runs about 130 and now got up to 180 on the way back in.

Are these two happenings connected?

Thanks in advance.

There usually is a lot of sand on the bottom, so a impeller inspection/replacement is needed.

Agreed, you need to check your impeller -- also check to make sure the water inlets are not plugged with sand / mud.

You may also need to flush out the engine -- if you are raw cooled (no heat exchanger) anything that the impeller sucked up went into your engine -- could have a blockage in there somewhere.....

I third that motion. Sand, Grass, and Dirt are impeller killers. Change the impeller and clean the ports then stay out of water that is that shallow.
