Hey guys, I KNOW I don't have enough information yet to help pinpoint this problem, but wanted to get ideas of what I can provide or look for in order to do so. This is an '88 Wellcraft 190 Classic, Merc 470, Alpha One. Motor runs great out of the water at all RPMs (idles at 750-800rpms). In the water, it usually takes a little throttle to start and doesn't like to idle for long. If you engage the throttle at all, it stays running and runs strong through entire RPM range. It began to develop a high pitched metallic rattling noise on our last trip out, and does the same thing out of the water. I'm not positive of what RPM it starts at (3200?), but only occurs at higher RPMs. I can get on plane and cruise at 22-24mph all day without hearing the noise, anything above and it starts. Sounds like it may be near the rear of the motor, exhaust possibly?

This is the family boat and sits at my aunt and uncle's, so I want to go over there prepared to find the issue. I will also take a video of how the motor runs and when the noise starts. Any and all suggestions appreciated! I don't want to cause any more issues by ignoring the noise.

Ayuh,.... Sounds like it's generally starvin' for gas,...

Start by checkin' the fuel filters for anything but clean fresh gasoline,....

If it goes lean at high rpms, it's probably detonation because of the lean condition, which will burn holes through the piston crowns,...
