Hi all, long time reader, first time poster.

I just re-wired my boat that has a merc 402 40hp electric start on it. I touched nothing at the motor, just put in a new ignition switch.

The Boat had a lanyard kill switch on the panel that I chose not to install on my re-wire. The motor will not start now. It turns over, but It doesn't seem to be getting spark. Could I have wired the kill wire into the ignition by accident? I'm not sure what wire it was at the console. Am I killing the engine at the same time I try to start it?

If this is the case could I:

Disconnect the kill wire at the engine?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

At the engine it's possible to disconnect the complete stop but then the switch won't work either, so as you know you shot yourself in the foot so to speak and need to redo the first repair. Make sure you have the right switch as 12 volts to the ign. can kill it and make even more work.

I've done a lot of electrical work to my 402 so I know the wiring pretty good.
there are 2 wires in the harness from the motor connection to the key switch that are kill wires. brown and salmon. if any of these wires are grounded you wont ever get spark. the salmon is supposed to go to the key switch so that when you turn the key to off it kills the engine.

Jarand,

Where would the brown wire be located? I see the salmon, but not the brown. I bought this used and someone has been playing with the wires and most of the colors have changed...
