I have a 2003 Merc 4stroke outboard I use it for my 8 ft 6 quicksilver inflateable. This motor has less than 100 hours and has had the oil changed every year, it comes out clean. the problem is low oil pressure when warm,(light is on at idle and low rpm). I removed the oil pressure switch and tested it, it switches off at 4 lb, just as it should. Second problem, low compression, dry wot 50 lb ,takes 6 pulls to get that, 2squirts of oil in the cylnder 100 lb with 2 pulls. This POS seems to be completely worn out. Any feedback on this would be apreciated. Thanks .

A couple of the local marine mechanics in my area have expressed concern about premature engine wear on these newer four strokes. Much conversation over the past few years about how they are seeing faster than normal engine wear, especially with smaller 4 strokes. Are we pushing these motors to hard to get them to compete wupith the 2 strokes? Many mfgrs rate the 4 strokes at rpm higher than 2 strokes to get the max hp..it seems warranty claims are high and going higher, so I have been informed anyway.

I will take a 1960's or 1970's OMC 6 HP any day.-----Far better and more reliable than some 4 strokes.

Yes, they do last forever. We had the 5 1/2 the year before they bumped it to 6 hp. That poor little engine went to Hell and back. It was submerged a few times, once at WOT, it was overheated enough that the Paint on the Head turned dark, and it was run with no oil in the Gearcase for a couple of weeks. Last time I saw it, it was 27 yrs old and still running strong, with no powerhead repairs having been done.

Yes I guess I must of over worked it. It seems strange that the old 4.5 2stroke Merc I had before could run wot all day long with no problem. So much for modern technology. Thanks for the feedback

New doesn't mean good. Give me a 40 year old 2-stroke over a 4 year old 4-strok

It could be an issue with really small 4 strokes, I suppose, being overworked. They have to work harder than 2 strokes since they're heavier. I have a 2003 Johnnyrude 60hp 4 stroke. Best motor I've ever owned... I guess newer is relative, I consider it old. 20yrs old to be exact..
