Merc 4.3 TKS dying at idle

Hey All,

I wanted to run some issues by the forum to give me an idea on what to do next, as I’m just about ready to give up and pull the boat out of the water and take it to a marina.

I have a 2006 Maxum 1800SR3 with a 4.3TKS (engine serial number OW612960). I put the boat in the water at the start of the season and had a real rough time getting it going. It would run for a few seconds at idle before dying, and I was barely able to get it in gear after multiple times starting it and throttling up to try and get it moving. I was able to drive it at 1/2, 3/4, and WOT on the lake for about 5 minutes until I got it into the canal where I dock it and had to slow down. Once I throttle down to just above idle it died and I wasn’t able to start it again at idle without it immediately dying. I was able to throttle up in neutral to bring it to life and keep it running at about 1800-2500rpm but it would still die off relatively quickly, and wouldn’t start in idle. A buddy towed it back to my dock where it has sat since. I have gone over and messed with it a few times trying to start it and it will start in idle when I pump the throttle a couple times before dying about 10 seconds later which makes me think the carb is maybe gummed up.
I’ve done the following things so far:

Replaced the fuel water separator, gas didn’t have any water in it and looked fine. I pulled the fuel line off at the carburetor and looked at the inline mesh filter which had a tiny bit of particulate in it but not very much at all, also checked to confirm fuel is coming out by turning the engine and spraying it into a jar (fuel pump is working). I’ve heard the TKS module can be a bit of a pain from videos I’ve seen so I pulled the TKS module off the carburetor this afternoon and blasted where it seats with carb cleaner and tried to make sure it’s not sticking or anything. I put it back in and started the boat, it idled fine for about 5min, I was able to throttle up in neutral with some hesitation from the engine but it stayed running.

After I turned it off for a minute and started it back up, same thing as before. It will run in idle when I pump the accelerator a couple times for about 5-10 seconds before it dies.

I think that it’s running lean rather than rich based on the smell and the carburetor being pretty dry after dying (no dripping fuel or anything I can see), and I’m debating pulling the carburetor and trying to blast out the innards with carb cleaner/maybe getting a rebuild kit for it.

Just wanted to run it by the experts to see if anybody else has any ideas based on the symptoms I’m seeing.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like the carb is clogged up

When motor is cold the TKS module stem is retracted. During this time more fuel goes into the cold motor similar to a choke being closed on older non-TKS carbs. Once motor is running the TKS module starts extending the stem which closes off the extra fuel in about 5 minutes.

Does appear the carb is working correctly your just not getting enough fuel once motor is warmed up and most likely do to idle circuits in carb are partly clogged

Have you adjusted both the Idle Mixture and Idle Speed screws after the engine has fully warmed up ?

Not yet, I’ve been hesitant to mess with the carb without a manual and have been having trouble finding one, and from what I had read I need a special tool for the idle mixture screw which I’m still looking for. Gonna go to a marina in the morning and see if they can get me a carb rebuild kit and that tool when I’m there.

Try adjusting it before tearing it apart but rebuild is likely .
you dont need the manual to do a tune up. Tune mix screw out half a turn see what it does. If you keep track of changes you make you can always set it back to where u started …

The TKS carb has a protective cover which can be removed but as mentioned by OP, it needs special tool to adjust
