He's quite correct... Go and buy yourself a set of 'ear muffs/flushers' from your local boat shop... Put those over the water intakes on the drive, turn the tap (I think you guys call it a 'facet') FULL on... Start your engine and run at about 1400rpm.... DO NOT rev the engine on flushers... You'll starve the pump of water and cook it...

You should really take the time to understand the cooling system on your boat. IMHO cooling system failures (including lack of maintenance on the elbows / risers / manifolds) are probably the #1 reason why engines come out on boats. The thing is you can follow other poeple's advice or a maintenance schedule ... but if you understand how everything works you'll KNOW what needs to be done and when ... you will KNOW when something is a problem.

To answer your question directly, there are two water pumps on your boat. One that circulates coolant around the engine (I take it you have a closed cooling system). This water pump has a cast iron impeller and circulates the coolant by flinging it off to the side at high speeds. It is located at the front of the engine. The other water pump is located inside the lower leg. It is inside a stainless steel housing and has hard rubber blades. Its purpose is to pump sea water to your heat exchanger which cools the engine coolant which then in turn cools the engine. This raw water pump as iti s called also pumps into both of your exhaust manifolds and risers. Therefore it cools the exhaust manifolds, exhuast gasses and helps to muffle the noise. So as you can see, its very important.

This raw water pump is different because this style of pump can actually generate some suction force to pull the water in. Whereas the coolant pump isn't designed to do that.

I ran the motor at idle for about two minutes. Do you think I destroyed my pump?

The only way to tell is to open it up and have a look... or take it out on the lake and see if it overheats....

Impeller yes, pump probably not. You have a gen II drive and it has a Stainless steel pump housing. You at least damaged the impeller enough to warrant replacement. After 2 minutes of no water, I wonder what the inside of the exhaust hoses look like. Charred rubber no doubt. The exhaust shutters are another item that don't take well to straight exhaust heat without water.

might want to spend some time in reading in this link. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=329915

Its going to be a wager. Are you really willing to take the risk? Pull the lower leg at the very least ... its easy.

Took it out last night, no issues. Stayed right at 150 for a few hours of mixed driving. Thanks guys. Going to buy the h2o muffs today.

That's what I was doing for the first half hour lol I will take the lower off to inspect though.
I'll let you know what I find.
How much is a impeller rebuild kit?
Thanks

Anywhere from $50 - $100 depending on whether or not you need a new housing. Hopefully, you didn't score it up and you can get by with just a new impeller. You'll need to drop your lower and pull the housing to check.

Whatever you do, go OEM. Aftermarket kits don't include the seating tools that you'll need and the quality isn't what genuine Merc is. For a critical engine component such as this, don't try and pinch pennies.

And use the alignment pins when you reassemble...
