I have A 98 4.3 merc I read the service bulletin on engine dieseling & it says one of the solutions is to go to A 140 thermostat instead of the 160 however the only 140 I can find is the older model 4.3 so does anyone know if this will work or better yet does any one have a part # for a 140 to fit a 98 4.3

Matman, Another way to fix the dieseling is to allow the motor to idle (and cool off) for 20 seconds or so, before shutting it off.

Re: merc 4.3 140 thermostat

Usually dieseling isn't much of a problem with the 4.3's, and I doubt a thermostat change will cure your problem.
Are you sure the engine is running properly? and tuned up?
Is the timing set correctly (Per the manual) not by ear, and depending on ignition type was it in base timing when set?
What is the idle rpm? To fast an idle will cause dieseling. Is the idle mixture too lean???
Plus like Chrix mentions, a quick shutdown after a fast run will sure cause dieseling. Allow some to to cool off before shutting off.
