Merc 302 w/888

I just bought an older searay 24ft w/ a merc 302/888 outdrive. The engine runs smooth, no issues except it does not exceed 3000 rpm trimmed correctly. I am gathering it is the prop pitch. Can anyone suggest a prop mfr and pitch for this motor and outdrive?

what pitch prop is on the boat and what model drive is it (merc alpha or bravo?)<br />each pitch you drop is roughly worth 200rpms <br />depending on wheather you change material from stainless or alumor stay the same.

It currently has a 19inch prop and has a alpha outdrive. I would guess dropping to a 17 or 15 would help. I'd like to get at least 3500rpm out of it.

Hey John this motor should have a wide open throttle of 46-4800 rpm if you are running a 17 and not getting at least this I would try checking your plugs,timing,cap rotor,and leads these motors are ignition friendly. trust me on this one befor changing your prop try this stuff <br />set your timing to 12 degrease BTC.<br />Good luck any outher questions email me at <br />totalmarine1@yahoo.com <br />Trevor
